New technologies attract attention. Technologies adopted across three consecutive product generations earn confidence.

In an industry shaped by rapid innovation cycles, sustained adoption signals something important: a technology is solving a real customer problem. Today, that problem is helping professionals run increasingly complex AI workloads without sacrificing mobility, efficiency or serviceability.

Engineers are running larger simulations locally. Developers are integrating AI assistants into everyday workflows. Creators are working with sophisticated generation, visualization and rendering tools. These use cases place growing demands on mobile workstations, particularly on the memory bandwidth and power efficiency needed to keep data moving across CPUs, GPUs and NPUs.

For IT leaders standardizing on the next generation of mobile workstations, these workloads change the calculus. Memory is no longer just a specification on a datasheet. It has become a critical factor in performance, battery life, serviceability and the long-term usability of systems deployed across the enterprise.

Lenovo first introduced LPCAMM2 to the ThinkPad P1 platform with Gen 7 and continued its adoption with Gen 8. What is new with the ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 is not LPCAMM2 itself, but the integration of Micron’s latest 1-gamma DRAM process technology into the LPCAMM2 architecture. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 is the first commercial mobile workstation to feature Micron’s 1-gamma LPCAMM2 technology, making Lenovo the first OEM to bring it to market. The launch also marks three consecutive generations of LPCAMM adoption in the ThinkPad P1.

Bringing Next-Generation Memory to an AI Mobile Workstation

Built on the Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 3 processor platform and featuring Micron’s 1-gamma LPCAMM2 memory, the ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 is designed for demanding AI, engineering, visualization and content-creation workflows.

The advancement in Gen 9 is Micron’s 1-gamma implementation of LPCAMM2, bringing the benefits of Micron’s latest DRAM process technology to the modular memory architecture already established in earlier ThinkPad P1 generations.

For years, workstation designers often had to choose between the performance, efficiency and compact footprint of LPDDR memory and the serviceability of traditional modular memory. LPCAMM2 offers a different approach, bringing LPDDR-class capabilities to a compact, replaceable module. That combination is particularly well suited to the ThinkPad P1, where Lenovo is balancing workstation performance with a premium thin-and-light form factor. The P1 Gen 9 combines Intel® Core™ Ultra Series 3 processors with up to 672 TOPS of combined CPU, GPU and NPU performance, helping enable demanding on-device AI and professional workflows while maintaining the mobility expected from the P1 platform.

Three generations of ThinkPad P1 adoption provide further validation. In an industry where innovations may appear for a single product cycle, sustained deployment signals lasting value for system designers and users.

A New Milestone for DRAM Technology

Micron’s 1-gamma node is the company’s sixth generation of advanced DRAM process technology and its first to incorporate extreme ultraviolet lithography. Compared with Micron’s previous 1-beta node, 1-gamma delivers more than 30% higher bit density and more than 20% greater power efficiency.

Those advances help system designers support demanding workloads within the power, thermal and physical constraints of a mobile device. Combined with LPCAMM2, they enable a memory solution designed to deliver responsiveness and efficiency in a compact, serviceable architecture.

LPDDR Performance and Power Efficiency

LPCAMM2 combines the performance and power-efficiency advantages of LPDDR memory with the flexibility of a modular design. By leveraging memory developed for power-sensitive mobile devices, LPCAMM2 improves power efficiency while delivering the bandwidth required for demanding workloads. For mobile workstation users, that can translate into greater efficiency and longer battery life without sacrificing performance.

Memory Bandwidth for AI Workloads

Micron’s 1-gamma LPCAMM2 in the ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 operates at 8533 MT/s. As CPUs, GPUs and NPUs work together to process demanding workloads, fast access to system memory helps keep data moving efficiently. For users, that can mean greater responsiveness when working with local AI models, engineering applications, large datasets and memory-intensive multitasking.

These capabilities become increasingly important as AI workloads scale. High-performance memory plays a critical role in helping keep data moving efficiently between those compute engines, supporting a responsive AI experience.

Creating More Freedom for System Design

In mobile workstation design, space is a strategic resource. LPCAMM2 reduces the motherboard area required for modular memory, giving Lenovo greater freedom to optimize the rest of the system around the needs of demanding professional users.

That reclaimed design space can be applied across cooling, battery, storage and other subsystems, helping Lenovo balance workstation-class performance with the mobility and serviceability expected from the ThinkPad P1. The result is a system starting at just 3.9 pounds without abandoning modular memory.

Modularity and Serviceability

Unlike soldered LPDDR, LPCAMM2 is removable and replaceable. Enterprise IT teams gain greater flexibility for configuration, service and potential upgrades while retaining LPDDR performance and efficiency. Easier replacement may also help organizations extend device lifecycles and manage workstation fleets more efficiently.

AI is driving change in how mobile workstations are designed, and memory architecture is increasingly central to that transformation.  By combining our latest 1-gamma DRAM technology with LPCAMM2’s modular form factor, Micron is enabling Lenovo to deliver the bandwidth, efficiency and serviceability professional users need. Lenovo’s adoption across three generations is powerful validation of the architecture and of what our companies can accomplish together.

Built for What Comes Next

AI is changing quickly, and the systems professionals rely on need to be designed not only for today’s workloads, but for what comes next.

That is the opportunity Micron and Lenovo are pursuing together: AI workstations that combine uncompromising performance with mobility, efficiency and the ability to evolve. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 9 brings that vision to life, pairing Lenovo’s workstation engineering with Micron’s most advanced 1-gamma LPCAMM2 technology in a premium, thin-and-light, upgradeable system.

Because being ready for AI shouldn’t mean being ready only for the AI of today. Through our continued collaboration, Micron and Lenovo are building for where AI at the edge is going next, and giving professionals the tools to go there with it.
