Transforming Information to Enrich Life
In artificial intelligence technologies, CPU processors provide the “brain,” but memory and storage make up the heart. Micron President and Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Mehrotra launches the Micron Insight ’18 conference with an inspiring opening keynote address describing the potential for AI to enrich, enhance, and extend our lives—and the critical role memory and storage technologies play, focusing on three areas:
- AI and Life. In India, Google is using AI to predict the location and severity of floods, and to issue alerts: “AI, supported by computer storage, connectivity, and memory, is saving lives.”
- AI and Health Care. AI holds the potential “to solve the biggest problems unsolved since the beginning of mankind,” unlocking the secrets of the human body. Researchers are developing AI technologies that promise to help experienced physicians diagnose, treat, and manage illnesses and diseases such as pneumonia, cancer, and diabetes—enabled by the “holy trinity” of data, memory, and storage.
- AI and Business. Speed-of-thought analysis of vast quantities of data is hastening and streamlining business processes as never before. AI-assisted farming, for instance, is 100 times more efficient than conventional agricultural techniques, as intelligent devices optimize light, temperature, humidity, and water for each stage of plant growth—without pesticides or chemicals.
“AI is transforming how the world uses information to enrich life,” Mehrotra says—and hardware, including Micron’s DRAM and NAND flash technologies, “is the essential disruptor.”
