Micron in Singapore marked the completion of its Singapore Fab expansion with a successful grand opening ceremony on Aug. 14, 2019. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat was present as the guest of honor and over 500 people attended the event. Micron’s President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, EVP of Global Operations Manish Bhatia, VP and Singapore Country Manager Chen Kok Sing, SVP of Backend Operations Gursharan Singh, Dee Mooney, Executive Director Micron Foundation were present at the event. Other guests attending the event included customers, suppliers, distributors, government officials, university leaders, community partners, and Micron team members.
Sanjay says during his address, “we benefit from a diverse culture with design, manufacturing, and assembly sites in many countries around the world. Singapore is our center of excellence for flash manufacturing and a critical contributor to our business success on a global level. Our expansion here gives our team the tools they need to extend our leadership in flash storage technology and ensure that for Micron, the best is truly yet to come.”
Driverless Vehicles Built by Students
The tour around the fab using the autonomous vehicle quickly became one of the highlights of the event. The vehicle was developed by four National University of Singapore (NUS) undergraduate interns with the support of our Micron team members, and the prototype was developed within six months Guests had an opportunity to see the autonomous vehicle in action. In June 2019, as part of the Advancing Curiosity program, the Micron Foundation provided SGD 101,000 (~ USD 74,000) to NUS Advanced Robotics Center (ARC) for an autonomous transportation research project. This collaboration between Micron team members and NUS ARC and Faculty of Engineering demonstrates how Micron’s memory drives and supports innovation that accelerates intelligence.
Guests explored the Experience Zone featuring smart manufacting initiatives allows us to be more effection and productive. These smart manufacturing capabilities allow us to improve our quality, efficiency and productivity by allowing us to make real time decisions and predictions.
